Custards & Puddings

Sugar Free dessert recipes are a joy to the home cook. Just because you have decided to end your sugar addiction, it doesn't mean that you have to give up on dessert forever. These simple dessert recipes are a great way to get back into dessert without going back on sugar. They help your sugar-addicted relatives feel like they aren't missing out either.

I started with custard when I began making easy sugar free dessert recipes again. It is a great accompaniment to fresh or canned fruit, or sugar free puddings. Custard powder is an easy and quick way to make custard, but some people feel that it is cheating.  Real custard can be made with dextrose too. All you need to do is substitute one for one with sugar in the recipe.

eggs for custard

Basic Custard

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon custard powder
  • 1 tablespoon dextrose powder

Mix all ingredients together in a small saucepan, then place over medium heat. Heat until the mixture thickens, stirring all the while. Remove from heat and allow to cool a little before serving. Custard will thicken further on cooling. Leftovers may be refrigerated and eaten over a few days.

For a delicious Chocolate custard that is a quick and easy sugar free dessert recipe:

Chocolate Custard

  • 1 cup milk
  • 1 tablespoon custard powder
  • 1 1/2 tablespoon dextrose powder
  • 1 teaspoon cocoa powder

Mix all ingredients together in a small saucepan, then place over medium heat. Heat until the mixture thickens, stirring all the while. Remove from heat and allow to cool a little before serving. Custard will thicken further on cooling. Leftovers may be refridgerated and eaten over a few days.

You can also make "proper custard" from eggs sweetened with dextrose, or even a custard tart. I just tried one for Father's Day and everyone loved it!

Other Easy Sugar Free Dessert Recipes

One of the next super easy to make dessert recipes I tried was my delicious Individual Chocolate Puddings. I found that this chocolate dessert recipe came out even nicer with dextrose rather than when made with sugar. They seem fluffier. They are also not as rich which is lovely when you are off the sugar. They go very nicely with the custard from the recipe above, or served with thick cream.

One old favourite easy dessert recipe of mine that I only recently tried with dextrose powder is a great way to spice up strawberries. This is great served with chocolate icecream or sugar free chocolate custard.

Balsamic Strawberries

  • 1 punnet of strawberries
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 2 tablespoons dextrose powder

Combine all ingredients in a small saucepan. Gently stir over medium heat until the strawberries have softened and released their colour into the syrup. Serve over cold chocolate ice cream or custard.
